Fashion Week: Graey
Janet Kim of Graey has romance in mind for her Fall 2009 collection. It's very fitting especially when she debuted her show one day before Valentine's Day. Her presentation, even though small and intimate with about 13 outfits, it's a well edited collection catered for a sexy, sophisticated woman who likes a bit of fun.
For Fall, Kim used a variety of silk and chiffon that juxtaposes in wearable silhouettes and colors. Her collection of cocktail dresses range from waist-defining one-shoulder numbers to plain shifts that have slight trapeze shapes that drape beautifully. Her wide use of colors - from pale green to a mix of bright magenta and orange - shows her range of feminine sensibility. This is a designer who loves the demure but she's not afraid to be vivacious at the same time.
In an economy where unemployment and recession are unfortunately the tour-de-force, it's very fitting and refreshing to see a young designer understanding the tough times. Kim chose to do a sensible show in an intimate setting. It also helps to have a little brother who's a World Poker Champion (according to the press kit, used some of his $2.5 million winnings to finance the collection) to help bank-roll the line. Aimed for the young, affluent, contemporary crowd, it will be interesting to see what Kim will come up next. -- Edith Moy.
